You wrote it down. That was the part you did right.

March, some Tuesday, a good one. It went in the file and the file is still there and you have not opened it since. The thought didn't get lost. It got left.

Setup is a folder and today's date. Two minutes. Go past two minutes and you've started building a system instead of using one, and building is the fun part, which is how the last six died.

Capture costs nothing. You dump and you walk away.

The read-back is where they all go under. Reading back means sorting a mess, spotting a pattern across six weeks, and digging one plain action out of a paragraph you wrote while annoyed. Your brain is worst at exactly that list. So the pile grows. The pile turns into evidence against you. Then you stop opening it, and the folder becomes another thing you're behind on.

Fifteen minutes, once a week. A timer, four things worth pulling out, and permission to stop when it rings. The stuff you circle without noticing, which you can't see one day at a time. The paragraph where you got heated, which is almost always the best thing in there.

Then the part no other book does. It plans for you quitting.

You'll drop this. A day, three weeks, whatever. The gap costs you almost nothing. The shame is what stops you walking back in. So the way back is one sentence long, and it's written down for you.

Consistency was never the requirement. You were handed a system built for a brain that runs in straight lines, and yours doesn't, and you concluded the wrong thing about yourself.
